Year 8

Project 1

Jewellery Stand

  • Pupils will design and make a jewellery stand using a range of different materials. They will analyse existing products to inform their own designs, which they will draw using isometric drawing techniques complete with rendering and shading. They will model their final design in the workshop using a range of different machines and tools. The designs will then be tested and evaluated against the initial design brief.

  • Hardwoods, Softwoods, Ferrous, Non-ferrous, Isometric drawing, Workshop safety, Evaluation, Testing

  • Ask them to name a few examples of hardwoods and softwoods, and their properties.

    Ask them to name a few examples of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, and their properties.

Project 2

Money Box

  • Students will design and make a money box. They will develop their woodworking knowledge further, allowing them to be more independent in their designs and selection of materials and processes.

  • Man-made board, Design brief, Design Specification, ACCESS FM, Risk assessment, Workshop safety, Scroll saw, Belt sander, Pillar drill

  • Ask your child what ACCESS FM stands for.

    Ask your child what a scroll saw, pillar drill and belt sander are used for, and how to use them safely.

Project 3

Forces

  • A graphics project which focuses on designing and making a board game and its packaging. Students will analyse existing board games before designing and making their own.

  • Design brief, Specification, Net, Oblique, Isometric, Perspective, Innovation, functionality, Aesthetics, marketability

  • Show your child some existing board games and ask them to list some positives and negatives about their design.

    Ask them why well-designed packaging is important, and what the key features of well-designed packaging are.

Project 5

Food

  • Students will prepare and cook a range of dishes, following recipes independently to make dishes such as pasta bake and jammy biscuits made using butter they make themselves. They will further develop their cooking skills and knowledge of working in a kitchen environment.

  • Frying off, Puff pastry, Rubbing in, Blind baking, Kneading, Proving, Aeration

  • Ask your child to support you in the kitchen.

    Re-cook any recipes you have already cooked at school and try to improve or modify them.

Project 4

Board Game
