Term 1

Refugee Boy

  • Pupils will analyse the themes and characters in the play.   

    Pupils will be able to understand the protagonist’s experience of life and empathise with him.  

    Pupils will continue their safe use of the Drama studio. 

    They will rehearse, perform their own work & evaluate that of others as well as their own.  

  • Empathy, asylum, refugee, stage direction, stage space, status, positioning, tension, monologue, cross-cutting.

  • Visit the theatre, watch live performances online, read fiction, and keep abreast of current affairs.

  • Refugee Boy play/ novel. Extra-curricular opportunities are integral to our curriculum, we will be offering a whole school production.  

Term 3

Stimuli

  • Pupils will complete a half term exploration on a real-life Crime and Punishment event that took place in the UK in the 1950s. They will be introduced to the life of Derek Bently and his tragic story. They will explore his life through the DVD fictional story called ‘Let Him have it’.

    Pupils will explore who Derek Bently is – taking into account social, historical and cultural context and then re-create devised scenes based around the trial for his alleged capital punishment.

    The pupils will use specific performance techniques to showcase and explore tasks. These skills and techniques include Cross-Cutting, Conscience Alley, Flash Forward, Flash Back, Thought Tracking, Freeze Frames, Characterisation, Vocal and Physical Skills.

    Pupils may already have knowledge surrounding the British legal system from other subjects; however, this topic gives them an opportunity to really deepen their understanding of a key historical moment in the British legal system. Pupils will be able to use Cross-Cutting to show contrasting feelings, understand and showcase climax as well as being able to explore Derek’s feelings shortly before his execution.

    Pupils will continue their safe use of the Drama studio.

    In order to rehearse, pupils will respond to stimuli such as videos and extracts. This exploration will enable them to perform their own work. After this they will evaluate their own performances and those of their peers to identify suitable targets for improvement and work to implement these across the half term.

Term 2

Crime and Punishment

  • Pupils will devise performances based on a different stimulus each week.  This will prepare them for C3 of the BTEC next year. Pupils will create performances for different audiences and purposes using various genres, styles, conventions and traditions successfully by the end of KS3.  

    Understand how to respond to a stimulus such as poems, photos, songs, articles, videos, and stories through discussion and practical exploration activities. 

    Pupils will:  

    Understand how to respond to a stimulus. 

     Select and develop skills and techniques in response to a stimulus. 

     Apply skills and techniques in performance in response to a stimulus 

     Evaluate the development process and outcome. 

    Pupils will continue their safe use of the Drama studio. They will analyse the stimuli via annotation, identify key themes, develop these into plots and ensure actors have equal dialogue in their characterisations. Lighting, sound and set will also contribute to their artistic intention/ communication of meaning to the audience. 

    Pupils’ practical exploration will enable them to perform their own work. After this, they will evaluate their own performances and those of their peers to identify suitable targets for improvement and work to implement these across the half term.

    Drama is the perfect vehicle to develop the vital skills of independence, appreciation, concentration, cooperation, confidence, creativity, communication and critical thinking.

    Pupils will be encouraged to analyse their everyday experiences/ surrounding through their interaction with media and human relationships in order to transfer their insight into their devising work. Pupils will be able to participate in the MAT production, attend theatre trips and attend extracurricular Drama club.
